are 8 Language Benchmarks
(CLBM) Canadian Language
Benchmarks from Beginner
to College Entrance. Most
Students stay at one level
for approximately 12 weeks
but this may vary according
to the individual. Please
note that levels may be
different for speaking
and listening and for
reading and writing.
CLBM 1-2 (Low Beginner-
High Beginner)
Student has only basic
knowledge of Speaking,
Listening, Reading and
Writing but is literate
in their first language.
This student requires
basic survival language
for communicative competency.
The focus at this level
is on listening and speaking
as well as to expand vocabulary
for authentic communication.
This course generally
has small classes of 3-5
students. Private or semi-private
instruction is 3 hours
per day.
CLBM
3-4 (Low Intermediate
to High Intermediate)
Students have intermediate
skills in reading and
writing and have the ability
to have a casual conversation.
The focus at this level
is still with communicative
competency and allaying
the fear associated with
conversation and communication.
Students focus on pronunciation,
accent reduction and vocabulary
building. Students who
express the desire may
focus on functional skills
of reading and writing
to advance to the functional
stream.
CLBM
5-6 (Low Advanced to High
Advanced)
Students can actively
participate in a formal
conversation and make
formal presentations.
They can function effectively
in academic and work related
situations. Students are
able to read and to write
with some level of fluency
but require vocabulary
building and expanded
knowledge of idiomatic
expressions. Students
engage in content based
learning about Canadian/
North American society
and culture.
CLBM
7-8 (Employment Ready
– Post Secondary Ready)
Students can function
effectively in academic
and work-related situations.
Has language skills with
almost native fluency
and needs only fine tuning
and accent reduction.
These students typically
are ready for content
based learning TOEIC,
TOEFL, TESOL, Business
English Communication
and Culture and Internship
programs.
